Then I wanted to know about the history of the lens. The images clicked using this lens gave a dreamy feel. I was amazed by the photos it could capture from my digital camera. Using this lens, I had to manually focus and click the photo since it consists optic and metal elements without any electrical elements. (might have witnessed the accident of Chernobyl) The lens along with the M42 mount (bridge between my camera and lens) was packed from the city of Kiev, Ukraine. I decided to buy Helios-44 58mm F/2.0 from an American seller, who posted the ad in French, asked me to pay the money in Euros. Currently, it is being sold on eBay in the range of $25-$75.

It was famous for the swirly bokeh(elliptical shape other than usual circular) near the edges of the image due to the imperfection in the lens itself, as you can see in the above image. On exploring more about the vintage lenses, many times I came across the lens name “Helios”. I stumbled on the concept of vintage lenses. I started to search for cheap lenses which will fit my budget. Portrait lenses are expensive, some of them cost more than the camera body itself. Higher the aperture, greater the blur in the background.

This effect is called the “Bokeh” effect. They blur the background and focus sharply on the subject. Portrait lenses are used to get the depth of field in the photograph.
